It didn't take me long to figure out that my new Lowrance Out&Back GPS would be best mounted to my kayak with a quick-detaching sort of mechanism. The Out & Back doesn't have the largest display in the world and because I prefer to have it mounted front of deck (just behind the forward crossbar of the Adventure Island), it's not always easy to read the information on screen. There are times where it's just better to read and or operate the unit when it's in your hand. The ability to remove the unit from its cradle in an instant is preferable to having to lean forward and unwind the socket arm and then remove the unit (faster and more reliable).
I could think of a few ways to achieve this but because RAM have a cradle designed specifically for this model, I decided to find a RAM flavoured solution. Initially I thought that a simple b sized variable swivel arm would do the trick and for sure, this would be superior to a typical single socket arm. Variable swivel arms are better for items that are removed and replaced frequently, but unwinding the single socket to release the unit is much the same process. A faster quick-detach system is the RAM Ezy Mount Quick Release Adaptor.
One side of the adaptor set is attached to the back of the cradle. The other is attached to the underside of a diamond B ball. Set up like this, quick removal is simply a matter of pressing the thumb tab and the two halfs of the adaptor seperate. Easy peezy lemon squeezy!
